WASTEWATER TREATMENT WITH ELECTRON BEAM TECHNOLOGY

Owing to advanced technologies, treatment of wastewater, even contaminated with any types of chemicals, bacteria and viruses, will enable to use the treated water for agriculture and industries instead of scarce drinking water resources, thus decreasing drinking water usage for such purposes and keeping it for human consumption only.
Complexes for treatment of wastewater and any contaminated water may be placed directly at wastewater treatment facilities, medical centers and industrial plants, and may be integrated with an existing pipeline system.

The unique feature of electron beam technology is the possibility of simultaneous treatment of wastewater from both chemical and biological contaminants. When exposed to accelerated electrons, chemically hazardous substances are destroyed and free radicals appear, which create new chemical bonds and are absorbed during filtration. Pathogens are destroyed due to the destruction of their DNA molecules by accelerated electrons.

Electron beam technology is the most effective method for treatment of highly contaminated water where other treatment methods may fail. This technology can complement existing treatment methods or replace them.

Electron beam treatment requires a prior advanced laboratory study of chemical, biological, bacterial and other species contained in water.

ADVANTAGES OF ELECTRON BEAM TECHNOLOGY
  • Technology
Antimicrobial wastewater treatment by electron beam irradiation is one of the most effective treatment methods. The sterilization of materials is done by radiation breaking DNA strands of all pathogens
  • Eco-friendly Method
Electron beam technology used for antimicrobial treatment is an environmentally friendly method that has zero waste, uses only electrical power and doesn't require any disinfectants or chemicals
medical wastewater treatment using electron beam technology
In cooperation with the IAEA, there has been implemented the pilot project on medical wastewater treatment using electron beam technology at a hospital in Asia. Now the facility sterilizes medical wastewater and decomposes antibiotics without additional disinfectants and waste.
"EB technology for medical wastewater treatment does not require a large amount of energy input or any steam or chemical requirement, and the complications involved in the transport of hazardous substances are avoided by using this technology, which minimizes negative impacts on health and the environment."
— Joao Osso Junior, Head of the IAEA Section of Radioisotope Products and Radiation Technology
electron accelerators for printing and dyeing wastewater treatment
Using the electron beam technology transferred by the IAEA, there has been implemented the project at a knitting plant to treat water polluted with residues of industrial dyes, which have molecules that are too unwieldy to be broken down using bacteria or chemicals. Owing to electron beam technology, these complex molecules can be decomposed and the treated water can be reused.
"Normally such wastewater would be treated through chemical processes which generate secondary waste. Electron beam treatment is an eco-friendly and cost-effective method of wastewater treatment as it saves the treatment time and cost for chemicals and there is no secondary waste generated."
— BumSoo Han, a radiation chemist at the IAEA
